Philadelphia, PA — July 27, 2009 — Associates of FutureScripts® have adopted a U.S. Army platoon serving in Iraq and this week shipped nine oversized cartons of care packages containing personal hygiene products, letters, cards, children’s artwork, and other items to show American soldiers their support. The Philadelphia pharmacy benefits management company ran an associate campaign and gathered items that the non-profit organization AdoptaPlatoon recommends for this program.
“Many of our associates have family members serving on active duty overseas and everyone was excited by the opportunity to do something together to show our patriotism and support for our troops,” said Paul Urick, R.Ph., senior vice president for FutureScripts. “The summer months are especially difficult in Iraq, so our associates wanted to help out by sending items that help soldiers cope with the extreme heat and blowing dust storms.”
The Army soldiers who FutureScripts ‘adopted’ are the 1-227th Attack Reconnaissance Battalion, stationed at Camp Taji. The camp is in a rural region of Iraq about 60 miles north of Baghdad, where the average temperature in July is 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
The care packages included powder, hand wipes, sanitizer, sunscreen, insect repellant, and other items to help the soldiers more easily manage through the hottest temperatures of the year. The care packages also included items for free time like playing cards, hard candy, DVDs, Frisbees, footballs, puzzles, sunglasses, and magazines. To demonstrate FutureScripts associates’ appreciation to the troops, the packages also contained children’ s drawings and notes, cards, and messages.
FutureScripts plans to support this platoon into the holiday season with December care packages collected as part of AdoptaPlatoon’s Stuff-a-Stocking Campaign, Urick said, adding that he and his 120 fellow associates are eager to make an impact in the lives of those serving our country.
The AdoptaPlatoon Soldier Support Effort (www.adoptaplatoon.org) was founded in 1998 as a volunteer-based, non-profit organization dedicated to serving deployed U.S. service men and women so they are assured that their efforts and sacrifices are not forgotten. AdoptaPlatoon strives to provide a better deployment quality of life by providing cards, letters, and care packages to lift the morale of troops as they serve far from home and their families back in America. AdoptaPlatoon provides ongoing mail and care package support, and establishes special projects for holidays to assist troops deployed around the world representing all branches of the U.S. military.
