Generic DrugsDiscuss generics with your patients

Generic prescription drugs are a money-saving, effective alternative to brand-name prescription drugs. A generic drug is identical in composition to its brand-name counterpart and is used to treat the same health condition. Generic drugs may look different because certain inactive ingredients, such as colors and flavorings, may be different. These ingredients do not affect the performance, safety, or effectiveness of the generic drug.

FutureScripts’ formulary is set up so that plan participants pay the lowest cost-sharing when prescribed a generic drug. We encourage you to discuss generics with your patients who are currently on brand-name medications and to prescribe generics, when appropriate, to help them save money.

Share with them that generic drugs are:

  • are safe and effective;
  • can cost up to 70 percent less than brand-name drugs;
  • have the same active ingredients as their brand-name equivalents;
  • treat the same health conditions;
  • meet the same rigorous health and safety standards set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Visit our formulary to check which of the brand-name drugs you most commonly prescribe have generic alternatives available in our lowest cost tier.
